Elvis Vs. The Beatles

K and I have on occassion had some interesting arguements as to who was more influential in the history of rock and roll, Elvis or the Beatles. This is an interactive blog and I would like you to weigh in. Pick a side (stay off the fence) and give us some reasons. They don't have to be good reasons, just have a take.

K says that the Beatles are without a doubt more important than Elvis. She argues that every band since exhibits some Beatle-like traits. I agree that the beatles have influenced countless others but I also say that Elvis was the strongest influence on the beatles and there would be no beatles if not for the influence of the King.

OK, you can take it from here. What's your take?

Elvis,

Why? 1. He's the freaking King.
2. The Beatles were influenced themselves by Elvis.
3. Elvis was probably the first to "sexually charge" rock n' roll.
He scared the bejeezus out of the "establishment" with that hip swivel. There's always controversy with the King b/c he put a white face on African American music.
Elvis helped to make rock n' roll very popular and put it front and center. Sure, there were some before him, but Elvis made the music explode.
Sort of the Eminem phenomenon. You know, when 50 year old soccer Moms are rapping along to "My Name is Slim Shady".

4. You don't go to Vegas to get married by John Lennon.

OK...here is the deal...Paul and the boys (most of them) are still kicking like chickens. Aint nobody can rock and create atmosphere like Paul...The King was a bit too hippy for me...Elvis...keep that Pelvis far from me! And, he was a freak!!! But, the Beatles...Who didn't cry the day John Lennon was killed? He was Killed...He was a hero...Now flashback to the King's death...not so impressive, now was it? I think we can all learn a little something here.

Who didn't cry when Lennon was shot?

I didn't. I was 8. I would have been more concerned if Cap'n Crunch got shot.

Paul McCartney now writes elevator music. Nothing new or earth shattering on his end.

Sorry, but I agree with Scott.

No Elvis, no Jerry Lee Lewis, no Beatles.

Actually, no Muddy Waters, no Beatles.
Frankly, screw the Beatles, the Stones were the true bad boys.

Rolling Stones!!!! Still kickin' it and kickin it hard!!

If you asked the Mo Fo's they'd tell you that Elvis would have pimp slapped all of them british honkey's without a doubt!

now that I thought about it for 2 minutes, I realize that a true measuring stick is to find out who, and investigate a band that has covered songs from both of these influences.

and that band would be "Motley Crue"

Elvis- Jailhouse Rock
on the "girls, girls, girls"cd it was a live version

The Beatles- Helter Skelter on the Shout at the Devil cd

The greatness of Motley Crue is that they did each of these songs well. But when it comes to being a "bad ass rocker" there is no question that an Elvis song leaves itself much better than the british invasion bubble gum crap.

unless you wanna bring up Black Sabbath, who was anything but bubble gum, and probably more influenced by the King as they were the anti-beatles.

ssw

Scott said...

Actually ssw, if you ever listen to any interviews with Ozzy, he always lists the Beatles as one of Sabbaths top influences. Both "Crue" covers are awsome, but I prefer the kick ass live cover of jailhouse.

you cant believe any of Ozzy's interviews. He was stoned out in every single one of them.

besides I was on your side. from now on I will agree with special K in spite of you, runner boy.

I'd say the Beatles, because there were 4 of them, and only 1 of Elvis. The "Beatles" music lives on through Paul & Ringo (and George before he took a dirt nap).

I reason this justification because John wrote songs without Paul, and vice versa, so any Paul song post-beatles is still a "Beatles" song, although I know you'll disagree.

The point is that their music lives on. Paul (more so than Ringo), still has an influence on music today, and continues to add to the world body of music. Elvis hasn't sung a note since '77.

Free as a Bird and Real Love are perfect examples of why The Beatles are more influential.

Anonymous said...

Once your dead, you don't live on through someone else. YOu may be remembered by others.

And it doesn't matter that there were Beatles, and Only 1 Elvis. Music = Music. if you wanna quantify this arguement, That can be done. But here in America, where we live. There are alot more people who have Elvis clocks and ceramic plates hanging in there houses than Beatles memorobilia. In fact ecept for a Beatles bong I once saw, I don't know of any Beatles memorobilia.

I find in this arguement that people who choose the Beatles seem to be to intellectual wannabes, and the people who choose Elvis, seem to be the "down to earth" types.

He is called "the King" for a reason.

The Beatles, don't have that kind of respect, even among their fans.

Alright, damnit.

1. The Beatles never put their songs to a disco track
2. The Beatles didn't get fat and shoot a television, they found some good karma and got naked in protest
3. The Beatles never wore polyester jumpsuits
4. The White Album
5. Sgt. Peppers
6. The Beatles made better movies
7. The Beatles cartoon
8. The Chipmunks (yes, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore) covered the A Hard Day's Night album
9. The Beatles songs were socially pertinent and poignant (albeit sometimes incomprehensible). Name one socially poignant Elvis song.
10. Did the Beatles sell out for a Vegas cabaret act? Hells no.

Did Elvis spark a music explosion? Yes. Did Elvis influence the Beatles? Yes, these things I can't deny. But who brought more to the table? Da Beatles, yo.

Anonymous said...

John Lennon had been quoted as saying, "If there hadn't been an Elvis there wouldn't have been a Beatles."

Hmmmm....So if the Beatles contributed the most and if there wasnt' an Elvis there wouldn't be a Beatles....Then wouldn't Elvis' contribution be greater since from his influence spawned the Beatles?

The greatness of a Vegas act should be in the positive category. Besides who gets married by paul or ringo(get a real name)????

every night people can get married by Elvis. Plus Elvis was married to a hotter chick than Paul, or John.

Elvis may have been married to a hotter chick than John or Paul but let us not forget that Ringo married a "bond girl", and they are still married.

as for kristi's comment about elvis not having any socially relavent songs I would have to say that "In the ghetto" would fit in that category. not to mention that it reminds me of growing up in the east.....and a baby cried!

The Fab Five have my vote. Sure Elvis is called the King and he did influence a lot of artist after him, including the Beatles. But he didn’t write hardly any of his songs. He basically just showed up and recorded the songs then left to go eat a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. What better song writing duo is there than McCartney and Lennon? Their songs rights sell for Millions now. Just ask Michael Jackson.

The Beatles didn't write their own songs initially. They did lots of covers of blues/rock tunes from African American artists early in their career.

Truth be told, the real "rock" influence was not from Marty McFly. If you know you history you will recall that chuck berry was influenced by Calvin Kline.

I'll concede that Elvis might have influenced pop culture (wedding chapels, collector plates, sideburns, etc) more than the beatles, but I'll still stand by my original analysis of the Beatles contributing more to music.

ELVIS IS DE WINNER

His music is way cool it comes from the roots of rock n roll and thats the blues and country.

The Beatles were good and have a huge collection of great songs but I class them as pop and elvis as the original blues rocken roll inventor. Black Blues and gospel music is soulful and truly great

Listen to "Million Dollar Quartet" a impromptu jam session with elvis, jerry lee lewis, carl perkins and johnny cash. Thats the beginning of rock and roll, and everyone in that room knew who the king was - elvis

you them chatting and everything

In terms of popularity, Elvis won. There was a list somewhere that the top three celebs in the world are 1. Elvis 2. Marilyn 3. James Dean. However, if you want to talk about who was more musically talented, i must say the Beatles. I myself am a musician, and part of the hardest things as a musician, is to write a great songs. Think of how many The Beatles wrote. Yes, Elvis did have a great voice, but he did not revolutionize music like the Beatles. I mean, how many people nowadays cite Elvis as a influence. I can think of one who actually said it, Justin Timberlake. But almost all rockers give respect to the Beatles. By the way, I am a big Elvis fan.

Anonymous said...

First. The Beatles were talented.. every member of the band was musically gifted. Further.. they are one of the best song writters.. EVER. Elvis was a performer. That is really all he did. If that makes up how influencial an artist is.. then Britany Spears and boy bands would be at the top of the ranks.

Second. The Beatles became more aristic as time went by. There music transformed with the times.. and is still relatable today. Elvis.. to say the least became less artistic. At the end of his career he performed in Vegas? In a sense he capitilized on his career (sold out).

Third. Social awareness. Enough said.

Forth. Eventhough Elvis influenced the Beatles.. The Beatles influenced many more artists.. hell, they launched the British invasion. Without them, we probably wouldn't of had bands like the Rolling Stones or the Animals. We would probably be stuck listening to surf music =[

Anonymous said...

I never really listened to the Beatles until I saw Across the Universe. That movie made me want to listen. I must say I was disappointed when I heard the Beatles sing. I realized I could only listen to their music when OTHER people were singing it. My point is, yeah the Beatles wrote good music, but in my opinion, they suck musically. They sound too britpop and it drives me crazy. Elvis on the other hand, I know didn't write many songs, he even admitted that he wished he could write his own songs and gave respect to those who could and did. But, despite that, I can't stand listening to other people sing his music. No one can touch the greatness that Elvis was on stage and no one will ever have a voice as mesmerizing as his. In my opinion, Elvis is King. Besides, Elvis came first. He inspired people before the Beatles ever came on the scene. He's the Original Gangsta

the beatles hands down!

To futher thrust the listenting world into arguement, just what we all need, by the way... It seems to me that whenever the people who post for Elvis say something, they repeat themselves. Seriously, the redundancy astounds me. However, whenever people post for the Beatles, though fewer in number we are, we have something new to bring to the table.

Do I respect Elvis and his performing talent, yes I do, but I believe he was but a firestarter for the Beatles who continued to influence music for quite some time.

This is what I believe.

Scott said...

Anon,
I think you have just stressed the point that I make in this argument, that there would be no Beatles without Elvis. The Beatles beginings were based on the music Elvis recorded. He (Elvis) was the inspiration that got the four lads started. If he doesn't sing and shake his money maker then the Beatles end up working the docks in Liverpool. Except of course for Ringo who would have become a huge celebrity anyway. Why? because he's Ringo.

Anonymous said...

Ah, it doesn't matter if he influenced them. The beatles plain and simply made better songs, better choices, and better out fits. Elvis was not bigger than jesus either. Hah, I cant say anything bad about elvis's music or the way he died. Over Dosing is a common way to die in the music biz.

This shouldnt be a two way battle...A 3 way...Not the stones, no sabbath no zeppelin...The beatles Elvis and michael jackson. Yeah he's a creep today but man he made some spectacular music. And had moves way better then the king. yeah had the first album to go diamond...only 2 have actually...him and 50 cent.

But between them all the beatles win...cause the two thats still alive aren't creepy and havent o.dosed. The beatles....Last time i checked the younger gen listens to them...Elvis..No..The beatles will stand the test of time with every passing gen...and when the 30 and beyond dies out elvis...the kings music will fade out...and be retarded. Nuff said.

The Beatles have sold more albums in the United States than any other band. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles number one on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. According to that same magazine, The Beatles' innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s, and their influence on pop culture is still evident today. In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of top-selling Hot 100 artists to celebrate the chart's fiftieth anniversary The Beatles reached #1 again.

Simply no comparison. elvis was a glorified karaoke singer who couldn't really play, let alone write anything, just more glamourous! the beatles were the greatest songwriters of all time, accomplished musicians & released some of the most influential albums ever, what classic album did elvis's team ever put out?

Anonymous said...

Ok, I've read all of the comments before mine & think they all have valid points & think that mine is not any better, BUT I'll state it anyway as I want to wake this blog up & put a new twist & shout to it.
To begin with, Elvis is like an Orange and the Beatles like an Apple. We are simply comparing
Apples & Oranges aren't we really? Be honest.
Elvis was like Orange Sunshine that the Beatles followed. They followed, like a good outfit of soldiers, the "Sun King"(Elvis)and wrote tons of odes to the Sun, but they were more cleaver i.e. wrote their own material and were better scribes and better apostles. They were like Paul the Apple Seed that needed the Sun/Son to grow. Jesus was the light & the way. Yes Paul/Saul crafted out that "Good Book" quite nicely as he, like the Beatles was clever and a good scribe. Paul created the whole CHURCH system! What a genius! Without Jesus, however, there would be no Paul, and no Desciples or Apostles or Gospels. You couldn't be a Christian without Jesus, let alone a Beatle-Freak like me! On the other hand, you may have never met your personal God without Paul of Tarsus would you? The one guy who commented that we will forget Elvis completly in the future may be right in the same way that so many have forgotten the Jesus that inspired Paul/Saul(The Beatles). We tend to forget our inspirations(thanks Scott). INSPIRATION is the operative word here folks.
Elvis inspired the Beatles & they NEVER said they were bigger than Elvis. That my friends, is because they were not. You can never become bigger than your inspiration as it inspired you and got you to were you are today.
By the way, I'm a total Beatle freak. The Truth.

Oh btw, Jesus scared the "bejeezus" out of the establishment too. ;-)

Also, If Elvis was a glorified karaoke singer, how could such geniuses like the Beatles worship him? No he was a deeply spiritual man & that is was people FELT when they listened to him. Plus Elvis rocked!

Beatles, hands down. My 13-year-old daughter listens to them, and when she was in preschool, everyone in her class would debate on which Beatles song was better. Elvis was a giant influence on the Beatles, as many of the above have said, but it's not like they were exactly copying him. Through generations, the Beatles will always influence, and they will always stay. On my walk down the aisle, they played "Here Comes The Sun". I didn't have any songs from Elvis.

Okay...

If you saved the world from exploding, and your father caused the trigger to set in motion the events that could lead to the explosion of the world does this mean that your father was more heroic than you were because if he wasn't there you wouldn't be there to save the world?

Elvis may have influenced or even spawned the Beatles, this however does not mean that he contributed the most to rock and roll. The Beatles did!! :P ...or Michael Jackson lol... and in doing so they saved the world! Clear enough..

JB said...

The argument 'Elvis influenced the Beatles, therefore is better' is a joke!

He doesn't automatically take credit for everything they created just for inspiring them in the beginning.

The bulk of The Beatles work which was considered ground breaking (Revolver, Sgt.Pepper's... etc) had very little to do with Elvis and 'his' music (which he didn't write himself).

This isn't to knock The King. He was an astonishing performer and a huge influence on music. Without him there wouldn't have a been The Beatles, this is very true.

But again Elvis doesn't get credit for all of their work! If we look at modern music.. it's more heavily influenced by The Beatles than by the music of Elvis.

It's hard to describe in words and I know I'm sounding very Pro-Beatles here but... have you listened to Revolver?? Sgt.Pepper's?? Magical Mystery Tour?? Abbey Road?? Their music was far more innovative, creative, intelligent and socially relevant.

Elvis brought black music to the mainstream, he was the first, and did it magnificently. But the music itself existed already.

The Beatles were pioneers, what they created was music of the highest quality, and entirely original.

I guess this is a separate issue, the issue of who was the better musician. The Beatles would win any contest of music quality/creativity/originality hands down. Sorry. Listen to Lucy in the Sky.

Elvis, by a landslide. No one's voice comes even close! The Beatles singing sounds like screeching.

As far as music, the music of The Beatles will stand the test of time and also as writers they were great. Elvis never wrote a single song, but he inspired singers the world over.

Elvis brought Rock and Roll to the mainstream, influencing almost everyone. When you heard him sing, you knew the latest genre of music was about to take over!!

Anonymous said...

Elvis. By a landslide.

Why?

Simply because he influenced just about every type of music, not just rock/pop, like the Beatles did. Elvis took jazz, blues, pop, country, swing, and turned them into what can be defined as the first big sound in Rock.

Oh yeah Elvis does not get any where close to the Beatles Blah Blah Blah. Shut your Mouth. Elvis owns the beatles anyday. Elvis sold 70 million records in one day(the day he died), That just makes my nipples hard every time I hear it. Oh elvis never wrote his own lyrics, who gives a ****. And to say that he has not sold more records than the Beatles, you must be a dumb *** to actually believe that ****. Are you really serious. RIAA is already saying that 40% of his record sales are not acounted for. There in the process of fixing that. I remember asking random people in Iraq, have you ever heard of The Beatles and 1 said yes. I asked what about Elvis about 20 said yes. Elvis is simply the most famous singer that ever lived. Hands down. But I love The Beatles. The Beatles were amazing. Elvis wins this competition hands down. The King!!

Even though Elvis is one of the greats and the king of rock and roll... I think The Beatles are much better than Elvis

1) The Beatles are much more influential today then Elvis is.

2) Each one of The Beatles wrote songs (apart from the ones that they covered). Elvis had to get his wrote for him.

3) Even though Elvis had just 1 more number 1 hit then The Beatles. Elvis' carrier was from 1957 to 1977... The Beatles was just 1963 to 1970... So Elvis had 13 more extra years then The Beatles to get more number 1's.

4) Sgt Pepper's... Revolver... Rubber Soul... The White Album... The Beatles Released some of the greatest albums of all time... Even though Elvis was great he could never beat any of those album's.

5) Elvis became over wait and no way near as good as his former self. That never happened to The Beatles.

6) It is well known that Elvis tried to get The Beatles banned from the USA because he said they were ruining the American youth... In other words he was scared and jealous of them.

7) A lot of people say with out Elvis there would be know Beatles and that is true there's no denying that... But in my opinion Elvis inspired The Beatles and The Beatles over took Elvis in world fame and also in talent.

I think Both Elvis and The Beatles are great... But for those reasons I think The Beatles are greater than Elvis. :D

you can't compare them. but incidentally you have to respect and cherish them both. although i am a bigger fan of the beatles (and also an american), elvis' story truly touches my heart. i believe environmental factors played a role in the way it ended for him. he was larger than life in america which tends to be more raw and flamboyant with performers than let's say 'other' places. but the beatles handled the fame and attention much better through the band's metamorphasis. if elvis had been a generation later, who's to say he wouldn't have traveled to india and started smoking pot? ultimately though, both groups paid the ultimate price for famedom. the beatles wrote better songs but elvis alone had a stage presence alone to serenade the audience.

Oh come on everybody - it's Elvis, of course.

1. Check out the Elvis movie "That's the way it is" (1970) and the Beatles movie "Let it be" (also 1970); you'll just see how much more contemporary, fresh and vibrant The King was when compared to the Fab Four - even in the so-called twilight of his career.
2. He's just sooooo funny. Have you ever heard the 1969 "laughing version" of "Are you lonesome tonight?" That one will brighten up your day, whether you're a fan or not. The Beatles pale in comparison, with their lame, rehearsed jokes.
3. His voice. In his book "The Great American Popular singers", Henry Pleasants said: "Elvis' voice covered two octaves and a third, from the baritone low-G to the tenor high B, with an upward extension in falsetto to at least a D flat. Presley's best octave was in the middle, D-flat to D-flat. In ballads and country songs he was able to belt out full-voiced high G's and A's, showing a remarkable ability to naturally assimilate styles, and elliciting a multiplicity of voices." Now I don't know what any of that means, but it surely beats the squeaky boy scout voices of the Four...

E-L-V-I-S, E-L-V-I-S, E-L-V-I-S, E-L-V-I-S, E-L-V-I-S, E-L-V-I-S!

You know....

elvis did indeed influence the beatles. and yes, a general lack of elvis would lead to a lack of the beatles. george harrison was a bright student with a positive future until he heard "heartbreak hotel" by elvis. but we are talking influence on music. the beatles were a rage for most of a decade. then when they split the world was shocked; however each individual member went on to lead astounding solo careers... with the exception of ringo who is the only beatle to not be inducted into the r&r hall of fame. as far as influence goes... elvis lead the initial surge into rock and roll which was a huge step. but i feel the beatles did more with his lead than he accomplished. also dying of a drug overdoes vs assassination kinda gives you a more heroic appeal. and this garbage i here about the stones being greater than the beatles.. its worth a laugh. i'll give them this: they were great but they didn't have near the success as the beatles. most people can name one maybe two beatles: john and paul. you ask a lotta people about the stones though and you'll be luck to get mick jagger outta them. the stones were good. but the beatles had a better track record. i know we live in america where you are supposed to cheer the underdog on but the stones aren't even on the same level as the beatles... nice try though

The fact that Elvis is being compared with The Beatles shows how great Elvis was. He was an instinctive genius. Elvis is the most under-rated musician in all of rock. OK he never wrote a song, but he turned fairly mundane tunes into rock'n'roll classics, one after the other, that takes talent. Elvis wasn't a purist, he'd sing whatever touched him. The king of rock'n'roll is a fair title, no one rock'n'rolled like Elvis! but it doesn't do him justice. He was more than that. He changed the way we talk, dress, sing, behave. Not many modern artists admit to being influenced by Elvis but they all are in some way. The Beatles were awesome. So good they were scary! I'm just glad we had them both. Elvis and the Beatles' meeting in 65' was not recorded, filmed or photographed. Another cock up from the colnell!

Both Elvis and The Beatles are legendary musicians to go down in history as GENIUS'!

I do tend to lean more towards The Beatles, I am a huge fan! There never has and never will be a band quite as unique and outstandingly brilliant. Between the four of them they had truly gifted writers, deep thinkers and fantastic musicians. They pushed limits and expectations. They weren't affraid to try something new to shock the nation. 100% absolute superb fantastic awesome genius musicians.
And Elvis... He is equally as memorable and possitively shocking to the standards back then. His voice is faultless; his style was outlandish... Something nobody could or can pull off! EVER! Other than himself ofcourse. He could sing any song and make it sound godly even if it was just, 'ok'.

I am more of a fan of The Beatles because their music always fits my mood and taste. Whereas Evlis' music does that only some of the time. That sounds weird because the both of them did a variety of styles but it still seems to be the case. No matter what, Elvis is no less memorable or talented than The Beatles... and there are four of them.

I have no answer.
And hypoctritically, I don't think people should be debating this. They each played their part in shaping music. They each brought something new to the world and people.
Pluss... They were friends and fans of eachother.

I like Elvis. Well, actually I love him Lol.
1) Elvis was extremely, extremely handsome. None of the Beatles were even remotely good looking.
2) Elvis has the most amazing voice ever. Ive never heard any one sing like him. The Beatles sound like crap to me.
3) Elvis was charismatic (sp?). I was born 15 years after Elvis died, Ive seen a lot of his concert Videos & his movies. To this day, Ive never seen any one as charismatic as Elvis; I get goosebumps just watching his Live videos.

4) I just think Elvis is a whole lot cooler.

Okay, before any of you say anything, listen to Elvis's Kentucky Rain. Listen to the part where he sings "In the cold..." I'm sorry to say this, because I'm a HUGE Beatles fan myself - but John Lennon pales in comparison. He never sang like the King. In the voice and singing category, Elvis definitely wins.

When it comes to originality and creativity, the Beatles are a notch higher. As believed by several people who came across this blog before I did, they wrote their own songs. And I think they were the first to come up with the idea of fusion (correct me if I'm wrong). Love You Too is really good, with the Indian sitar and percussion.
:)

Now, record sales. Elvis had one more #1 than the Beatles. The Beatles, it is said, sold more records on the whole, but 40% of Elvis's record sales weren't even counted back then.

Influence. Hmm. The great Sir Elton John said, "Elvis was the one that started it all. If it weren't for him, I don't know where popular music would be now." Or something to that effect. The Beatles themselves, as the point has already been established, idolized Elvis and were inspired about him.

The present generation appreciates the Beatles' music better, I feel, because it was much simpler, cheerful-er and down-to-earth-er. One can sing along with them very easily. But does the same hold true for Elvis? The answer is no.

Elvis was a master of pain. "I'm Leavin'," anyone? His singing was more subtle and had much more emotion and depth : it was just perfect. I've said it once, I'll say it again, I'll say it a hundred times over, though I don't like the sound of it - but John Lennon pales in comparison. I'm sorry.

Listen to Elvis's gospel songs. They were just WOW. Crying In The Chapel : what a masterpiece! Again, John Lennon couldn't even come close to that level of singing or emotion, I feel.

Elvis had so much variety. He was SO much more than a Rock 'n' Roll legend. He really, truly was the King, and not just of Rock 'n' Roll. A lot of his songs were slower, more melodious and so very soothing. Very often, his singing makes my hair stand on end. Doing The Best I Can, Love Me Tender and Can't Help Falling In Love stand testimony to that. Hey Jude, Love Me Do, Yesterday, Let It Be and John Lennon's Imagine are all amazing songs, but they lack the class - the cutting edge - that the aforementioned Elvis songs and others such as Suspicious Minds, In The Ghetto, Mystery Train, A Mess Of Blues and Long Black Limousine have.

Hey Bulldog and Back In The USSR vs Jailhouse Rock and Burnin' Love? I dunno. A tie, I'd say.

But on the whole, I like Elvis better, I feel his music was better and I know for a fact that his singing was better. (I'm sorry I'm saying this one thing so many times, but it's a fact that I want to drive home very badly.)

And please, all of you, go easy on me. As stated before, I love the Beatles too.

Elvis was just a little better than them, that's all.

I think that you are all IDIOTS. Elvis was great for 5 years total TOPS until he turned into a FAT DOUCHE. The Beatles were great until John Lennon (god rest his soul) turned into a douchebag.

The fact is, you can't compare the two because neither Elvis or the Beatles were rock and roll for more than a handful of their songs.
Elvis ruined himself with his ego.
John Lennon ruined the Beatles with his ego.
Feel free to trash me (I know at least the psycho Elvis fans will) because the day I care about what people that call Elvis "The King" think, will be the day I die the same way he did.....ON THE THRONE.

For the record: I AM A FAN OF BOTH ELVIS AND THE BEATLES, BUT I AM ALSO NOT A MORON. I AM A REALIST. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!

The beatles because Elvis is not the king although he died on "the throne".
They Beatles were more musically gifted each being good at the drums-Ringo. Guitar-George he could play it upside down!Guitar and singing- Paul. Poet and singer and guitar-John.

I know people say that elvis was more "sexy" and had a hotter girl friend. But the beatles had a sexayy accent :)

Anonymous said...

WOW.

It's like comparing two completely different things. Elvis was a significant individual, the Beatles were a band. I say the Beatles would be the BEST band ever, and Elvis the BEST solo artist ever!!! I def think the Beatles are so much more appreciated than Elvis tho. It's a little more modern, I suppose. But ELVIS, man, NOTHING CAN COMPARE. No one will ever be as cool. If you have not looked him up, like DEEPLY researched him, you haven't seen NOTHING yet. The way he moved on stage- not just his dancing for all u literal folks out there, but the way the music affected his whole body- his chest, his shoulders, his face-the whole effect is really amazing.

The Beatles knew how to rock I'm not doubting anything. But it's just that for me personally, watching Elvis and listening to him is SOOO much more exciting. The beat gets going, his voice has such a rawness and fiery passion to it-- very bluesy and original! I feel like dancing or snapping everytime I hear one of his earlier songs. The Beatles songs are very artistic and their style is very unique- but their stuff doesn't get me going crazy, you know? It's AWESOME, but Elvis had such a PRESENCE!!

And I know everybody puts him down because'AWWW he died of drugs. what a loser' Or ' Yeah he got all fat and he was addicted- he deserved to die.' Elvis always used the quote, ' Don't criticize what you don't know. You haven't walked a mile in that man's shoes.' Elvis lost his mother at an early age and missed her ever since afterwards. He took medication to help him sleep at night because he was so depressed and anxious. Life was hard, ok? If you want to say bad things about him, go ahead. Forget about him.

You're really missing out. HE was really one of the main people who started a music revolution, if not THE person. He inspired the Beatles. Elvis was the first one they wanted to see when coming to the U.S.

Better yet, why can't we aLL just love BOTH of them forever and ever and quit comparing??? Why does there ALWAYS have to be "THE BEST'"?

Anonymous said...

Before Elvis there was nothing. If you judge him from the EARLY beginning of his life til the end, then maybe some of you narrow-minded people can realize how huge of an impact he had on music. Before him, NOTHING. There were of course nice classy singers, good ol' famous icons that are greatly appreciated of course, but it was all sort of the same. When Elvis came, it changed everything.

And just saying, but what does it matter if there are FOUR of the beatles and only one of ELvis? Because to me, if there's one person who made such a significant effect on music, it's even better!!! just ONE single person did that.

And who cares if he didn't write his own songs? It doesn't make him any less great. He had STYLE, PERSONALITY,- and he was humble and polite.

At the end of his life, sure things got out of hand. He wasn't trying to be weird. He was on medication and all. He knew what he looked like. He was self-concious. He was not happy in his life at that time. If you just put yourself from his point of view... think about his early beginnings... think about all that he wanted to do in his life but never got to do... he had gotten so far. look at elvis as a huge picture, not just at the tiny part at the end of his life where he wore costumes-(which are still famous today, so...) the entire life.

Unknown said...

I cannot believe people are even favouring Elvis, he didn't write a single song but yet gains credit and becomes the so called 'King'.

And 'he's better because he's good looking' is the funniest thing I've ever heard, have a nice personality and an apealing phyisque does not equate to musical talent and it's laughable that most of you seem to think in that way.

And as for popularity? The Beatles were much more popular. 27 number ones in 8 years and 1.3 billion albums sold since '62.

He was the Beiber of the 50's - Sung others songs and gained credit for it.

Better in what regards,

Composition Beatles
Musicianship Bealtes
Marketing Bealtes
Management Elvis
Gimmick's Elvis
Vareity Beatles
Performce Debatable

Even elvis was inspired by somebody just like robert johnson was inspired by somebody. So would you say that metallica is nothing because they were inspired by bands when they were teenagers.

Grow up and understand that what the beatles did was create a pop/rock record industry blue print for how to monopolize and market to teenagers and dominate national listeners ears. They set the blueprint for mainstreem pillage.

In regards to rock n roll....majority of bands including elvis and johnny cash had a studio band and performing band. The beatles were the band and each one had a personality. This formula of bass, guitarm guitar and drum had been a staple in music since 1960.

Elvis was a singer and person with soul...beatles were singers, songwriters, and payed there own music and tunes. We are dealing with mucisians vs. singers. What do you like more an entire pizza or just a slice. Take your pick.

To be the best, you have to have the complete package. Elvis had it all. He could preform better than ANY one else in rock n roll history, he sang love songs that could melt any girls heart, and he is the handsomest man ever, next to Usher. As far as i am concerned, the Beatles, "Aint nothin but a hound dog."

I love both Elvis and the Beatles. However, when you consider the incredible size of Beatlemania there's no doubt that the Beatles were bigger than Elvis. After all there's no such historical phenomenon known as "Elvis-mania." The Beatles became so huge that they had to give it a name in the media... no one before or since has gotten that big. Also, the musical breakthroughs that the Beatles made are still felt today in every contemporary musical genre including Jazz. In fact, virtually everyone I know who is involved in music - whether scholars or musicians - holds the Beatles in such high regard that it's uncanny. Having said that, Elvis influenced the Beatles... the Beatles were HUGE Elvis fans - and without that formative influence there wouldn't have been any such band as the Beatles.

Anonymous said...

actually being a musician myself and a studious and passionate one at that, I do not like the beatles at all. I've never really been a fan of their music. I really enjoy Elvis's music alot. Being a Jazz musician, still the beatles have had no influence on what I sing. I listen to Ella, and Frank, and Dean Martin. Long live the rightful king, Elvis! haha

Rowen said...

There would be no Jimi Hendrix without Bob Dylan and there would be no Beatles without Elvis. Hendrix and the Beatles took music to a whole new dimension exceeding their heroes..... and for that the Beatles take the cake on this argument!

Anonymous said...

I am writing a research paper on the influence of Elvis now. Elvis is no doubt the most influential musician. No one has an argument valid enough to say that the Beatles were more influential. Sure, they ARE influential, but who influenced them? Elvis. John Lennon even said it himself, before Elvis, there was nothing. Rock and roll would not have became as popular as it did without Elvis. He brought it up out of the corners that no white American in its conservative society would even dare to look. The Beatles would have never even heard of rock and roll if it wasn't for Elvis. So anyone who b elieves the Beatles were more influential than Elvis is clearly uneducated on the history of rock and roll.
